Benz Tips · Climate & A/C2019–2023 GLE & GLS A/C blowing hot?

6 min readUpdated October 2026By Elite Benz master technicians

The short version
  • The A/C evaporator on 2019–2023 GLE and GLS models has a known leak issue.
  • Recharging the system buys time, but repeated recharges can lead to compressor failure and a bigger bill.
  • We recommend no more than 2 recharges before replacing the evaporator.
  • The evaporator sits deep behind the dashboard, so the repair means removing the dash.
  • Average cost at Elite: about $3,100. The same repair at the dealer: around $5,200.

The problem: a slow leak you can't see

If you drive a 2019–2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE or GLS and your A/C keeps going from ice cold to warm, you're not alone. These models frequently leak refrigerant from the A/C evaporator, the part inside the dashboard that actually cools the air before it reaches your vents.

The leak is usually slow. The A/C works great after a recharge, then weeks or months later it starts blowing warm again. In Lowcountry heat, that gets old fast.

Why “just recharge it” gets expensive

It's common for owners to have the system refilled once or twice a year. The trouble is that refrigerant also carries the oil that lubricates the A/C compressor. Every time the system runs low, the compressor runs with less lubrication and works harder.

Our rule of thumb: refill the system no more than 2 times. If it leaks out again, replace the evaporator before the compressor and other A/C parts are damaged too.

A failed compressor can add a lot to the bill, and debris from a failing compressor can contaminate the rest of the system. Fixing the leak at the source is almost always the cheaper path in the long run.

Why this repair is such a big job

The evaporator sits deep behind the dashboard. To reach it, a technician has to carefully remove much of the interior and some of the cowl area:

  • Dash assembly
  • Steering wheel and steering column
  • Center console
  • Wiper blade assembly and motor
  • Cowl and trim
  • Evaporator housing

It's complex and invasive work. Done carelessly, it can leave rattles, warning lights or damaged trim. Done right, the car goes back together exactly as it left the factory. Our master-certified technicians each have 13+ years of Mercedes-Benz experience and do this job routinely.

What it costs

Pricing varies by model and what else we find once the dash is apart, and you approve everything in writing before we start. We use factory OEM Mercedes-Benz parts, and the repair is backed by our 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty.

Mercedes-Benz currently does not offer an extended warranty on this specific component, but we always check your VIN for open coverage and recalls first, and we'll tell you if your dealer should do any part of it at no cost.

Signs your evaporator may be leaking

  • The A/C blows cold after a recharge, then warm again weeks or months later.
  • Air from the vents is cool but never really cold on hot days.
  • You've already had the system recharged once or twice this year.

We confirm the leak with proper testing before recommending the repair, so you're not replacing parts on a guess.

Common questions

Which Mercedes models have the evaporator leak?

We see it most on 2019–2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS models. If you have a different model with a recurring A/C leak, we can test it and tell you where the leak is.

How many times should I recharge my A/C before replacing the evaporator?

We recommend no more than two recharges. After that, repeated low-refrigerant running can damage the compressor and raise the total repair cost.

How much does a GLE or GLS evaporator replacement cost?

Our average is about $3,100. The same repair at the dealership is typically around $5,200. Your exact price depends on the model and is approved by you before work begins.

Is the evaporator covered by an extended warranty?

Mercedes-Benz currently does not offer an extended warranty on this specific component. We still check your VIN for any open coverage or recalls before quoting the repair.

Mercedes-only. Done right the first time.
