Benz Tips · MaintenanceMercedes Service A & B codes, explained

6 min readUpdated November 2026By Elite Benz master technicians

The short version
  • The letter is the base service: Service A is the lighter visit, Service B adds a cabin filter and a brake fluid exchange on most models. They alternate about every 10,000 miles or once a year.
  • The number (A1, A3, B3, B7…) adds extra items that are due at that visit, like an air filter, spark plugs or a transmission service.
  • There's no single chart for the numbers. The same code can mean different items on a different model, engine or year.
  • Elite Benz in Summerville, SC looks up what's really due for your VIN with factory XENTRY.
  • We don't offer separate A and B services: one yearly service, one price, every year, from $474, tax included. Extra items are quoted up front with photos.

What the letter means: Service A vs Service B

Your Mercedes keeps track of its own maintenance and shows a reminder in the instrument cluster, like “Service A due in 30 days” or “Service B3 due”. The visits alternate: A, then B, then A again, usually about every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

Service AThe lighter visitSynthetic oil and filter, fluid checks, tire pressures, brake inspection, service reminder reset
Service BService A, plusOn most models, a cabin (dust) filter and a brake fluid exchange

Both include the items on your model year's factory service sheet, which is why two cars with the same letter can still get different work.

What the number means: A1, A3, B3, B7 and more

The number after the letter is shorthand for extra jobs your car's maintenance system has grouped into that visit. A B3 is a Service B plus the items behind the 3. Those items are set by your model, your engine (gas or diesel), your model year and your mileage and age.

There's no single chart. On many cars a 1 brings a brake fluid exchange, and a 3 brings an engine air filter plus spark plugs (gas) or a fuel filter (diesel). But the same code can mean something different on another model or year, and higher numbers often include bigger items like a transmission service. The reliable answer is your car's service sheet for its VIN.

Find out exactly what your code means

Elite Benz has licensed MBUSA XENTRY, the same factory diagnostic system the dealer uses. We can read your car's maintenance data and look up the service sheet for your VIN, so you know what the code really includes before you spend anything.

  • Take a photo of the service message in your cluster.
  • Call or text us at 843-259-8080 with the photo and your VIN, or bring the car in.
  • We tell you what's due now, what can wait and what each item costs.

How Elite Benz handles your A or B service

Service A or B due? One price, every year. We don't offer separate A and B services. Every year your Mercedes gets the same complete yearly service at the same price, from $474, tax included (AMG adds $40), so you know what it costs before you walk in.

Every yearly service includes a XENTRY quick test of all systems, injector and transmission adaptation checks, a road test, a full synthetic oil change, fluids, engine bay leak check and cleaning, belts, main and auxiliary batteries, tire rotation, every brake pad measured, steering and suspension, every interior function, the sunroof cleaned and lubed, seals treated, fuel injector cleaner, service and TPMS resets, a new key battery and a complimentary wash and vacuum.

If your code says your car is due for something extra, like brake fluid or a transmission service, we show you a photo, tell you why it matters and quote it before we do it. You decide what gets done and when. Look up your model on our price sheet to see your exact price, tax included, or read why we offer one yearly service.

Common questions

What does Service A mean on a Mercedes?

Service A is the lighter of Mercedes' two alternating maintenance visits, usually due about every 10,000 miles or once a year. It centers on the oil and filter change, fluid checks, tire pressures and a brake inspection. A number after the A (like A1 or A3) adds extra items that are due at that visit.

What is a Mercedes B1 service?

B is the more complete visit: everything in Service A plus, on most models, a cabin (dust) filter and a brake fluid exchange. The 1 adds extra work due at that visit. The exact item depends on your model, engine and year, so the only sure answer is the service sheet for your VIN, which we can look up with XENTRY.

What does Service A3 mean on a Mercedes?

It means a Service A plus the extra items your car's maintenance system has grouped under the 3. On many cars a 3 brings an engine air filter and spark plugs (gas) or a fuel filter (diesel), but the same code can mean something different on another model or year. Send us your VIN and we'll tell you exactly what's due.

How much does a Mercedes B7 or B5 service cost?

It depends on what the number adds. A higher number often brings bigger items, like a transmission service or spark plugs. At Elite Benz you don't pay for a B service: you get our one yearly service at one price, from $474 tax included, and any extra item your car is due for is quoted up front with photos before we do it.

What does a Mercedes Service B include?

Everything in Service A (oil and filter, fluid checks, tire pressures, brake inspection, service reminder reset) plus, on most models, a cabin filter and a brake fluid exchange. Any number after the B adds more items for that visit.

What is on the Mercedes Service A checklist?

Synthetic oil and filter change, fluid level checks and top-offs, tire pressures set (including the spare where equipped), a brake inspection and the service reminder reset, plus the items on your model year's service sheet.

Can I wait on a numbered item?

Sometimes. Some items are time-based and some are mileage-based, and some matter more than others. We inspect the car, show you photos and tell you what's needed now and what can wait. You decide.

Does Elite Benz do Service A and Service B?

We don't offer separate A and B services. Every year your Mercedes gets one complete yearly service at the same price, from $474 tax included (AMG adds $40). If your dash shows a numbered code, we look up what's really due for your VIN and quote any extra item before we do it.

Mercedes-only. Done right the first time.
