Benz Tips · MaintenanceDealer or independent? Your warranty, explained

7 min readUpdated November 2026By Elite Benz master technicians

The short version
  • Servicing at an independent shop does not void your Mercedes warranty, as long as the factory specs are followed. Nothing we do voids your factory or extended warranty.
  • Keep your oil change records. It's what a dealer can ask for before warranty work. You get an electronic and a paper copy of every service, and it's reported to Carfax.
  • The dealer still fixes recalls and warranty items at no cost. We find them, tell you, and write the exact complaint on your invoice so the dealer visit goes smoothly.
  • Our repairs carry a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty, backed nationwide at about 58,000 shops.
  • Elite Benz in Summerville, SC costs less: yearly service $474–$662 by model, tax included, versus $750–$1,500 at a dealer.

Will an independent shop void my Mercedes warranty?

No. By law you are not required to service your Mercedes at the dealership, as long as the manufacturer's specifications are followed. Any work we do will not void your factory warranty or your extended warranty.

While your car is under the 4-year / 50,000-mile factory warranty, we use the factory-recommended oil to keep that warranty valid. Once it's out of warranty, we have better choices for the long haul if you plan on keeping your Benz, and we'll walk you through them.

Same tools, same training. We use licensed MBUSA XENTRY, the same factory diagnostic system the dealer uses, and our master technicians spent 13+ years each at Mercedes-Benz dealerships. About 75% of the parts we install are factory Mercedes-Benz parts, and the rest are OEM quality.

Keep your service history (we make it easy)

If you ever need warranty work at a dealer, the one thing they can ask to see is your oil change history. That's why we keep it simple:

  • Every service we do is logged electronically.
  • You get an electronic copy and a paper copy of every service, every time.
  • Your service is reported to Carfax, which the dealer can look up.

We can't see your past dealer records ourselves, but we can call the dealer and get your history. We do that when it matters for the repair, like when we're tracking down a check engine light.

What the dealer still fixes at no cost (and how we help)

Going independent doesn't mean giving up anything the dealer owes you. Every time your car is here, we check it with XENTRY for open recalls, factory warranty items and extended part coverage, and we tell you what the dealer should do at no cost.

Recalls are done by Mercedes-Benz dealerships at no cost to you. We flag them and help you get scheduled.

Extended coverage on known problem parts. Mercedes-Benz has extended the warranty on a few parts that are known to fail. These don't always come up at a busy dealer service desk, so we bring them up:

EnginePart with extended coverageTypical repair value
M264 (4-cylinder)Cylinder head repairAbout $4,000
M271 (4-cylinder)Camshaft adjustersAbout $3,500
M274 (4-cylinder)Crankcase vent valveAbout $1,100

If your car is still inside Mercedes' extended coverage window, we'll check it for you. Getting it done can be a difficult process, so we walk you through it: on your invoice we write the exact line for your complaint and how to talk to the dealer about it.

One honest tip for the dealer visit. We're the dealer's competitor, so their service desk won't go by what we say. Expect them to charge their own diagnosis fee up front; if the repair turns out to be covered, you don't pay it. Walking in with "Elite Benz said this is covered" can get things off on the wrong foot. Instead, describe the problem in your own words, using the complaint line we wrote on your invoice, and ask them to check whether your car has extended coverage for it.
Already paid for one of these repairs here? If we did the repair and the part was under Mercedes' extended coverage (not a recall), we can give you all the paperwork you need to ask Mercedes-Benz for reimbursement. Mercedes usually pays back about 80% of the repair. It's rare, but it can be done.

  • Goodwill promise: a one-time goodwill repair of a covered item within 30 days after the 3 years ends, reviewed case by case by our Service Manager.
  • Traveling? More than 25 miles from us, call the nationwide warranty line first at 1-866-541-9805 (Mon–Fri, 8 AM–8 PM ET), before any work is done. It includes roadside assistance (up to $150 a year) and trip interruption help (up to $250).
  • Nationwide covers A/C and heat, brakes, electrical, cooling, engine management, fuel, ignition, starting and charging, steering and suspension, and more.
  • Nationwide doesn't cover internally lubricated parts (like turbos, timing chains and transmissions) or maintenance items. Our own repairs on those are still covered by our 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty when you come back to us.

Normal wear items like brake pads, wipers and filters aren't covered unless they fail from a defect. Full details are in how your warranty works.

Have an extended warranty plan?

Most dealerships won't take aftermarket extended-warranty plans. We will, and we file the claim for you. We work with companies like Endurance, CarShield and Silver Rock.

Be ready for some out-of-pocket cost. These plans cover less than most owners expect, they can be slow to approve a claim, and they rarely pay the full cost of a repair, at the dealer or with us. We adjust our pricing to keep your share as low as we can, and we tell you what's covered and what you'll pay before any work starts.

Common questions

Will servicing my Mercedes at an independent shop void the warranty?

No. By law you don't have to service at the dealership, as long as the manufacturer's specifications are followed. Elite Benz in Summerville, SC uses the factory-recommended oil while your car is under the 4-year / 50,000-mile factory warranty, and nothing we do voids your factory or extended warranty.

What records do I need if I ever make a warranty claim?

Keep your oil change history. It's the one thing a dealership can ask to see before doing warranty work. We give you an electronic copy and a paper copy of every service we do, and your service is reported to Carfax, which the dealer can look up.

Can you see my past dealer service history?

We can't pull it up ourselves, but we can call the dealer and get it. We do that when it matters for the repair, for example when we're chasing a check engine light.

Does Mercedes ever cover a repair after the factory warranty ends?

Sometimes. Mercedes-Benz has extended the warranty on a few known problem parts, like the M264 cylinder head, the M274 crankcase vent valve and the M271 camshaft adjusters. If your car is still inside Mercedes' extended coverage window, we'll check it for you and walk you through getting the dealer to do it at no cost.

Do you do Mercedes recall repairs?

Recall repairs are done by Mercedes-Benz dealerships at no cost to you. We check every car for open recalls with licensed XENTRY, tell you what the dealer will fix, and help you get it scheduled.

Do you accept extended warranties like CarShield or Endurance?

We accept most extended-warranty companies, including companies like Endurance, CarShield and Silver Rock, and we file the claim for you. Most dealerships won't take these plans. They usually leave some out-of-pocket cost, even with us, so we adjust our pricing to keep your share as low as we can and tell you what's covered and what you'll pay before work starts.

What if something goes wrong when I'm out of town?

Our repairs are also backed nationwide for 3 years / 36,000 miles at about 58,000 participating shops in the U.S. and Canada through the PAC Nationwide Warranty. If you're more than 25 miles from us, call 1-866-541-9805 first (Mon–Fri, 8 AM–8 PM ET), before any work is done.

How much less does Elite Benz cost than the dealer?

It depends on the job. Our yearly service is $474–$662 by model, tax included, where a dealer visit often runs $750–$1,500. An M278 V8 front cover repair is about $4,200 here versus $6,200–$6,500 at a dealer, and our transmission service is about $400 less.
